Nominations for 2025 afe awards open until september 5
Each year, the Association for Fire Ecology recognizes the accomplishments of exceptional individuals in the field of fire ecology and management. We have a variety of awards, which span career stages and can be personalized to recognize a specific area of expertise or contribution. Contributions may be in research, management, teaching, mentoring, Indigenous fire stewardship, traditional use of fire, applied science, extension, boundary spanning and partnerships, policy, or another area of focus or expertise. 2025 Awards will be presented at the 11th International Fire Ecology and Management Congress, which will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana from December 2-6, 2025.

Undergraduate and Graduate Student Excellence Awards
The Student Association for Fire Ecology presents Student Excellence awards to recognize undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate great service and potential as a professional in the field of fire ecology.
Early Career Award
An award initiated in 2020, the Early Career Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of fire ecology and management within first 10 years of their career. Nominees can work in any area related to fire ecology and management and their contributions may be in research, management, teaching, mentoring, Indigenous fire stewardship, traditional use of fire, applied science, extension, boundary spanning and partnerships, policy, or another area of focus or expertise
Distinguished Leader Award
This award recognizes individuals who are mid-career and have become an exceptional leader in the fire ecology and management. Contributions may be in research, management, teaching, mentoring, Indigenous fire stewardship, traditional use of fire, applied science, extension, boundary spanning and partnerships, policy, or another area of focus or expertise.
Lifetime Achievement Award
Since 2003, AFE’s Lifetime Achievement Awards have recognized sustained and long-term contributions in the field of fire ecology. This award honors individuals who have inspired and mentored a generation of fire ecologists, shown leadership in the field, and made positive impacts on the wildland fire community. As of 2025, we will present one Lifetime Achievement Award annually, and awardees can work in any ecosystem or topic area. Awards can be personalized by defining a particular expertise or contribution. Contributions may be in research, management, teaching, mentoring, Indigenous fire stewardship, traditional use of fire, applied science, extension, boundary spanning and partnerships, policy, or another area of focus or expertise.
