AFE Webinars
Fire CAFÉ webinars are 1 hour, online discussions hosted by the Association for Fire Ecology and designed to advance understanding and collaboration for important fire ecology topics or issues. While the agenda for each Fire CAFÉ may vary based the organizer’s goals, all will provide a presentation to frame the topic and include a facilitated discussion. Attendees will be able to participate in the discussion via chat, audio, or video.
Upcoming Webinars:
May 15, 2026: Navigating Treatment Data: Choosing the Right Dataset for your needs
There is a growing demand for high quality, spatially explicit, cross boundary treatment data including information on the type, location, age, and ownership of fuel and vegetation treatments. This information is essential for reporting accomplishments and understanding fuel treatment effectiveness in reducing wildfire risk to values. Several platforms now offer cleaned and collated treatment data from disparate source databases. Researchers and practitioners need to understand the nuances between the different datasets; for example, who can access the data, what source data are used, and which treatments are included or excluded.
Understanding these differences and deciding which dataset best meets a user’s needs can be challenging. The goal of this webinar is to help users understand the similarities and differences between the primary aggregated treatment datasets available to them including the Integrated Interagency Fuel Treatment Service, Fuel Treatment Effectiveness Monitoring, GARP Hub, TWIG, and LANDFIRE’s Disturbance and Treatment Polygons.
Participants will leave the webinar with a general understanding of these datasets, how to select a dataset based on their specific use case, and where to go to learn more.
Past Webinars:
September 23, 2025: ReSHAPE: Reshaping Wildfire and Fuels reduction information
The Southwest Ecological Restoration Institutes (SWERI) established the ReShape Program in response to feedback from policymakers, land managers, and researchers. ReShape compiles and displays national-scale data on forest treatments and wildfires through the Treatment and Wildfire Interagency Geodatabase (TWIG), a user-friendly, collaborative, and open-access decision support tool. The program is actively engaging with relevant audiences (land managers, collaborative groups, wildfire researchers) to encourage TWIG’s use and gather feedback on its usability. ReSHAPE program research efforts focus on four key areas: social science for collaborative decision-making, biophysical effects of forest treatments, data science for large dataset analysis, and economic assessments led by the Conservation Economics Institute.
After introducing the ReSHAPE program and the Treatment and Wildfire Interagency Geodatabase (TWIG) and showcasing applications of TWIG data through two case studies of treatment and wildfire interactions, the presenter team will facilitate an open discussion on the usefulness of the geodatabase and viewer, research or management questions, complementary analysis tools, and potential improvements.
Presenters: Aidan Franko (Southwest Ecological Restoration Institutes, ReSHAPE Program), Patti Dappen (New Mexico Forest and Watershed Restoration Institute), Anson Call (Colorado Forest Restoration Institute), and Claire Rapp (Colorado Forest Restoration Institute)
Partner Webinars
The International Association of Wildland Fire (IAWF), the Pau Costa Foundation (PCF), and the Association for Fire Ecology (AFE) organize the Partner Webinar Series, a series of webinars to bring together diverse voices from the global wildland fire community.
