Description:
The Delmarva Prescribed Fire Crew Member will participate in the day-to-day activities of the Delmarva Prescribed Fire Crew as directed by the Delmarva Prescribed Fire Crew Manager. The Crew Member participates in prescribed fire activities, including burn unit prep, fire operations, maintenance of equipment and supplies, mop up, and monitoring. They will participate in the restoration of fire-adapted landscapes which may include timber stand improvement, vegetation management, fuels reduction, and monitoring. They may also assist in general preserve stewardship activities such as preserve monitoring and maintenance, building and facilities maintenance, maintaining tools and equipment, and other tasks. May perform other land management duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire.
As part of the employees ongoing professional development, they will be responsible for keeping abreast of new burn techniques, land management practices, and equipment to enhance skills and maintain/grow professional fire certification credentials. In addition, they shall work to build and maintain relationships in the professional fire and conservation community and in the local community where the Conservancy works.
The position period is January 26, 2026 through May 22, 2026.
Qualifications:
High school diploma and 6 months of related experience.
Must be qualified as a Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2), including Introduction to ICS (I-100), Human Factors on the Fire line (L-180), Introduction to Wild Land Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130), and one training burn serving under the supervision of a qualified FFT2. Ability to achieve and maintain arduous physical fitness standard. Must be able to walk 3 miles in less than 45 minutes carrying 45 lbs.
Experience operating and maintaining various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g.: chainsaw, UTV, tractor and implements, chippers, leaf blower, BK radio, hand tools, drip torch, etc.)
Must have valid driver’s license.
Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR).
Desired Qualifications:
Multi-lingual skills and multicultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
6 months -1 year of related experience.
Must have valid driver’s license and good driving record.
Ability and willingness to follow instructions from colleagues.
Other training which supports development of knowledge and skills: ATV Safety and Operations, S-212 Wildland Chainsaws, S-211 Portable Pumps and Water Use. Preference may be given to those with higher qualifications (above FFT1).

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with TNC’s Auto Safety Program. Housing is provided and located in Lewes, DE.
