Plant Ecology Research Technician

Overview:

The Jones Center at Ichauway is currently accepting applications for a Research Technician II position in the Plant Ecology Lab. The employee will assist with many aspects of ongoing research and plant conservation, with particular emphasis on plant-animal interactions, plant identification in long-term vegetation monitoring plots, and seed collection and propagation. Other duties include data entry, working with camera traps, and other lab/office work as needed. This 17-month position begins August 2025 (with possible extension) and reports directly to the Plant Ecology Research Associate.

Qualifications:

  • M.S. degree in biology, botany, horticulture, plant ecology, habitat management, or a related field. Alternatively, B.A. or B.S. with a minimum of three years of relevant fieldwork experience.

  • Previous experience with seed collection, plant identification in the southeastern U.S., and rare plant conservation preferable.

  • Experience with trail cameras and wildlife identification (especially birds) is desirable.

  • Excel, GIS (including Field Maps), and laboratory-related experience is also preferable.

  • Field work requires moderate to strenuous physical activity in the field, under demanding conditions (e.g., heat, high humidity, exposure to poison oak/ivy, and insects).

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

  • Ability to independently follow instructions.

  • Ability and interest in leading technician crews.
