Description:
As the Cultural Fire Management Council Fire Coordinator you will work as part of a team that is highly motivated to restore fire processes across Yurok ancestral lands and beyond. All CFMC employees participate in the implementation of cultural burning aimed at achieving culturally appropriate land management objectives such as habitat restoration, enhancing biodiversity, reducing wildfire risk, restoring and maintaining ecological conditions and processes, and removing invasive and unwanted species.
As the Fire Coordinator you will coordinate with the local school district, CAL Poly Humboldt the Tribe, and others to implement a youth cultural fire program to educate the next generation about the importance of fire on the land. You will receive training in plant identification, ecological observation and vegetation monitoring methods.
Duties involve rigorous fieldwork that requires above average physical ability. The fieldwork may often be conducted during extreme heat (above 100 degrees F), extreme wet, cold (under 32 degrees F) and smoky conditions. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs. Work requires standing, walking over uneven ground and on steep slopes for extended periods, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing and pulling small diameter trees, branches, brush and objects necessary to perform job functions. Duties also include demands for strenuous activities in emergencies under adverse environmental conditions for extended periods. Operation of some specialized fire equipment can place extended physical stress during fire activities.
Job Duties:
Plan and organize fire-related youth-oriented activities including fieldtrips and internships
Assist with grant writing and reporting
Assist the Plant Stewards Fire crews with invasive plant removal and plant stewardship tasks.
Perform vegetation and fire effects monitoring tasks utilizing tools such as GPS enabled tablets, maps, field forms and hand tools. Training will be provided.
Assist with securing signed land use agreements and waiver of liability from landowners
Community outreach (notify of upcoming cultural burns etc)
Participate in cultural burn implementation while adhering to directives given under the incident chain of command, including igniting fires, deployment of hose lays, securing the fire edge, extinguishing spot fires, patrol, protecting legacy trees, and other burn operations as assigned.
Assist with educating the public about the benefits of fire
Establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with other employees, agency personnel, and the public.
Assist with planning fire training events
Other duties as assigned.

Maintain job site safety, correct any unsafe conditions or actions and report to supervisor if problem is not resolved.
Requirements:
Have a valid Driver’s License
Successfully complete the entry level fire line courses (basic 32) within 3 months of hire date, including passing the pack test.
Have excellent writing skills
Ability to work effectively with Native American people
Have knowledge of cultural resources
Able to communicate well and work well with youth
