Tall Timbers Research Station, founded in 1958, is a leader in fire science and prescribed fire training. Its research has shaped modern fire management, and it continues to advance regional and national programs with innovative curricula and collaborative approaches to fire management.
Course Description
This course provides the knowledge and skills necessary to analyze, plan, and implement strategies to manage smoke from prescribed fire and wildland fire. The curriculum emphasizes smoke management techniques, air quality regulations, health and safety issues, and tools for predicting, modeling, and mitigating smoke impacts on the public and transportation corridors. Instruction includes classroom sessions, facilitated discussions, case studies, and simulation exercises

Objectives
Identify smoke management objectives and regulatory requirements.
Apply tools and techniques for predicting and modeling smoke dispersion.
Develop and evaluate strategies to reduce smoke impacts on sensitive areas.
Incorporate smoke management considerations into prescribed fire plans.
Share lessons learned from your own experiences managing smoke.
Strengthen the community of fire practioners.
Target Audience
Personnel with prescribed fire planning and implementation responsibilities, land managers, fire leaders, and those seeking qualification as Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 2 (RXB2) or other advanced prescribed fire positions. We are seeking a wide range of fire practitioners who have Rx fire implementation roles on their lands in order to share their own smoke management experiences. All of us are united in our responsibility to manage our smoke as we seek to increase the amount of acres safely treated with Rx fire
Cost
$450 due upon acceptance into the course. Instructions will be provided regarding payment. Lunch will be provided, as will coffee/snacks throughout the day.
