Wildfire hazard modeling using BurnP3+

This two and a half day, in-person course provides a foundation for developing and running spatially-explicit wildfire hazard models using the BurnP3+ package for SyncroSim. The course covers wildfire simulation modeling concepts, how to use BurnP3+ to create models of ignitions, burning conditions and fire growth to explore wildfire hazard across a landscape, and how to interpret and share model results. Examples of BurnP3+ simulations using a variety of fire growth models (Cell2Fire, Prometheus, and FireSTARR) under a range of environmental conditions will be presented.

Course Start: April 14, 2025 @ 8:30am ET

Course End: April 16, 2025 @ 12:30pm ET

Location: York University, Toronto, ON

Instructors: Leonardo Frid (ApexRMS), Colin Daniel (ApexRMS), and Denyse Dawe (Canadian Forest Service)

Audience

This course is designed for those who are new to BurnP3+ and would like to increase their understanding of wildfire burn probability and hazard modeling. This includes those who have been introduced to wildfire models through various workshops or projects, but now wish to build and run models themselves. The course is computer-exercise based, fast-paced, and delves into advanced modeling topics. Although no software knowledge is required to participate, an introductory understanding of the R programming language is recommended.

Learning Objectives

  • Burn probability modeling concepts, as they have been applied to estimates of wildfire hazard across a landscape

  • How to create and run a burn probability simulation model in BurnP3+, and how to interpret model results

  • How to obtain and prepare data required to run BurnP3+

  • Approaches for incorporating uncertainty and variability into burn probability simulation models

  • How to use alternative scenarios to compare model outcomes given varying fire growth models, management strategies, and weather data

  • How to run BurnP3+ using the R programming language

Topics Covered

  • Theory behind burn probability simulation models

  • Building reproducible BurnP3+ models: configuring model inputs, such as weather and fuel data, and partitioning analyses using pipelines and dependencies in SyncroSim

  • Running BurnP3+ models: comparing alternative scenarios, viewing model output, and exporting results

  • Publishing BurnP3+ model outputs: visualizing and sharing model results using SyncroSim Cloud

  • Introduction to scripting workflows with BurnP3+ in R using the rsyncrosim package

What’s Included

  • 20 hours of instruction and support from knowledgeable instructors over 2.5 days

  • Introduction to BurnP3+ training manual and exercises

  • Morning and afternoon coffee/snacks (lunch is not provided)
