Follow AFE on social media for updates on how SAFE chapters spend their grant funds.

Penn State University

Awarded $580 for Two Fireline Packs and Two Fire Helmets

This chapter needed equipment for members to participate in prescribed burns and other wildfire management activities. This will contribute to their current equipment inventory.

Washington State University

Awarded $200 for a Trip to a Burn Lab, Event and Fundraising Supplies

This chapter was seeking candle-making supplies to repeat a previously successful fundraiser, food and beverages to boost engagement at club social events, and funds to take a field trip to the University of Idaho burn lab. This grant will encourage wider SAFE participation and foster cross-university community for fire ecology.

University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point

Awarded $300 for Fire Helmets

This chapter required more fire safety equipment to accommodate their increasing number of members interested in participating in prescribed burn opportunities. This funding will provide new fire helmets to add to the current inventory, and provide an opportunity for SAFE members to participate in prescribed burns.

Northern Arizona University

Awarded $1000 for Partial Airfare for a TREX

This chapter has been awarded funds to partially cover member airfare for the annual Spring Break TREX Trip. This grant will allow students who would not be able to afford the airfare participate in a Prescribed Fire Training Exchange and gain valuable first-hand experience.

Utah State University

Awarded $600 for Two Sets of Nomex

This chapter will purchase Nomex field clothes to allow members to attend prescribed burns who are not in the position to purchase their own fire safety equipment. The provided funding will create an opportunity for professional experience in fire ecology for SAFE members.

Texas Tech University

Awarded $700 for a Chainsaw, Saw Safety Training, and Two Sets of Chaps

This chapter was seeking a chainsaw, safety training, and the required personal protection equipment to participate in prescribed burns and habitat restoration efforts. The AFE grant will provide SAFE members with in-field learning opportunities and further career growth in fire ecology through education.

University of Florida

Awarded $850 for S-130/S-190 Training

This chapter has been awarded funding for five members to participate in a S-130/S-190 training course. This will both fulfill an educational requirement, and benefit the University of Florida fire ecology community by giving SAFE members the background to facilitate informed discussions. Raising the level of expertise within the chapter will directly benefit future educational and research endeavors.

University of Washington

Awarded $360 for Two Field Trips to Burn Scars

This chapter received funding to ease the cost of two annual field trips for SAFE members to tour previous burn scars in the Washington Cascade range. This opportunity for hands-on learning in fire management creates a knowledgebase that will greatly enhance future career opportunities.

California Polytechnic State university

Awarded $600 for S-130 Field Day

This chapter can now provide SAFE members with the necessary training to receive their FFT2 qualifications, so they can safely participate in prescribed burn activities rather than just observing. This access to wildland fire training will be pivotal in increasing member engagement and laying foundation for a future career in fire ecology.
