Fire-Effects Field Botanists

Fire-Effects Field Botanists (GS-5 & GS-6 Biological Science Technician) positions available at Ozark National Scenic Riverways, a unit of the National Park Service.

The GS-5 seasonal position will pay $16.73 per hour and the GS-6 seasonal position will pay $18.65 per hour. We expect to have one of each position. Both positions start on 4/26/2021 and continue through 10/22/2021. 

 Benefits include paid holidays, sick leave, vacation leave, optional subsidized health insurance, and the opportunity to qualify as a wildland firefighter. 

Park housing has been available to rent for the previous 20 field seasons and probably will be in 2021. However, housing is not guaranteed, and no commitments to place staff in park housing can be made until the official hiring offer is made.

 Live your passion for botany while helping to evaluate the results of prescribed fire in the Ozark Highlands. This work guides the restoration of high-quality glades, woodlands, & fens. It is primarily field botany work in glades and woodlands, along with data entry into a database. If qualified, staff may participate in a prescribed burn or a wildfire deployment to another state.

 Applicants must be capable of hiking for a few miles with heavy packs over very rugged terrain in hot humid conditions with exposure to ticks, chiggers, & other pests. This position also includes occasional overnight travel to Arkansas (lodging, meals, & transport covered by NPS).
