Duration: Permanent Year-Round
Hours: 40 hrs/week, some overtime required.
Duty location: Glenwood, WA with negotiable remote work possibility (1-2 days/week). Some travel required (<10%).
Work environment: Mix of office and field-based work, including prescribed burns that will involve smoke/heat exposure and hiking on steep, uneven terrain.
Salary and benefits: $56,000-$71,000 DOE. Benefits include paid time off, paid federal holidays, health insurance, and 3% SIMPLE IRA employer match after 6 months employment.

Mt. Adams Resource Stewards (MARS), a non-profit organization founded in 2004, is seeking a highly-organized, detail-oriented individual to coordinate and expand prescribed fire in the south Mt. Adams region. Primary duties will include coordination of the Mt. Adams Prescribed Burn Association (PBA), a coalition of private land managers supporting one another in implementing prescribed fire on private lands, and the Columbia Gorge Prescribed Fire Training Exchange (TREX), an annual 2-week immersive prescribed fire training event held in Trout Lake, WA. The Coordinator’s daily work will include meeting facilitation, burn plan writing, landowner outreach & site visits, fire effects monitoring, participation in local prescribed burns, and numerous other activities that increase MARS’s capacity to conduct and support prescribed fire treatments.
Required Qualifications:

Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with people and partners from varied backgrounds.
An associate or bachelor’s degree from a two or four-year college or university involving study in one (1) of the following: Forestry, Biology, Agriculture, Geology, Fire Management, or a closely related science degree; OR professional experience in a related field (i.e. wildland fire, prescribed fire) will substitute year-for-year for education.
Certifications/licenses:
Valid driver’s license.
NWCG Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) and annual RT-130 and work capacity test, or ability to obtain this certification within 1 year.
Ability to obtain Washington Certified Prescribed Burn Manager certification within 3 years.
Desired Qualifications:
Experience working with rural communities and people with diverse backgrounds.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with other organizations (private, local, state, federal and/or Tribal), to coordinate efforts to manage fire-dependent landscapes.
Familiarity with Washington State prescribed fire laws and smoke management regulations.
Experience with GIS and ArcGIS Pro.
Familiarity with the ecology of the fire-dependent ecosystems of the Mt. Adams and Columbia River Gorge region.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Mt. Adams Prescribed Burn Association (PBA) coordination (40%)
Facilitate PBA planning meetings and member meetings.
Conduct site visits with landowners, assist with burn plan writing, and coordinate burn implementation.
Coordinate with MARS Equipment Cache Manager to build and maintain the prescribed fire equipment cache.
Participate in PBA-supported prescribed burns.
MARS prescribed fire program development (25%)
Develop MARS prescribed fire manual.
Write and review burn plans for Mt. Adams Community Forest.
Coordinate with Stewardship Crew Program Manager to engage the Stewardship Crew on prescribed burn prep and implementation projects.
Develop and implement a fuels and fire effects monitoring program.
Participate in local prescribed burns.
Columbia Gorge Prescribed Fire Training Exchange (TREX) coordination (20%)
Serve as primary TREX coordinator during the pre-TREX planning period.
Support the Columbia Gorge TREX Incident Management Team before and during TREX.
Prescribed fire policy and outreach (10%)
Build and expand acceptance of prescribed fire within the greater Columbia Gorge region through community events and partnerships.
Expand interagency prescribed fire coordination (Tribes and federal/state/local agencies).
Grow partnerships with nonprofits, land trusts, and other private organizations/individuals to broaden use of prescribed fire.
Develop and present informational materials to the community in a way that is clearly understood.
Administrative duties (5%)
Manage grants/contracts related to fuels and prescribed fire, including the 5-year Community Wildfire Defense Grant awarded 10/2024.
Working Conditions:
This position will require work in an office environment as well as working in the field in all types of weather conditions.
Coordinator will be required to attend prescribed burns, which includes exposure to fire, heat, flames, smoke, and other hazards.
This position will require walking, bending, and stooping at times, while also carrying up to 50 pounds of gear and equipment.
Schedule:
Expected 40 hrs/week. Some weeks may be more, some less.
Work hours will remain flexible to enhance functionality and ensure program goals are achieved.
Weekend and holiday work may be required.
Travel Requirements:
Frequent local travel to project sites and prescribed burns, plus occasional longer travel for meetings/conferences or prescribed fire events, will be required.
A MARS vehicle may be available for transportation; however, the Coordinator will be expected to provide their own transportation for travel throughout Klickitat and adjacent counties for meetings, landowner outreach, and other field duties. All mileage is reimbursable at standard GSA rates.
