Women in Wildland Fire Training


This training program offers an introductory immersion into wildland
firefighting for women pursuing careers in fire or related fields. Participants will undergo essential Red Card certification courses, complemented by hands-on field days and exposure to a prescribed burn. Moreover, the program aims to foster connections between attendees and seasoned female firefighters, researchers, and practitioners within a supportive and inclusive setting.

Ultimately, our goal is to empower women to enter and thrive in the
wildland firefighting profession:

  • Acquire essential training and certification required for entry-level positions in wildland fire management.

  • Gain hands-on experience through field activities and participation in a prescribed burn, enhancing practical skills and confidence in fire management techniques.

  • Connect with experienced female firefighters, researchers, and practitioners, fostering mentorship and professional relationships crucial for career advancement.

  • Participate in specialized sessions and conversations tailored to women in fire management, empowering participants to take on leadership roles within the industry.

Who is Teaching: This Training is sponsored by the University of Montana Fire Center. It is organized and run by graduate students and staff who have experience working in wildfire. Additional instructors from Federal, State and private entities will be volunteering their time to teach throughout the course in their area of expertise.

Cost: $15 to cover the cost of a T-shirt! we will cover the cost of lodging, food, and most gear. Attendants will be responsible for providing appropriate footwear and leather gloves.

Where: Lubrecht Experimental Forest - 30 miles northeast of Missoula. Attendees will be required to stay at lodging provided on site during the Training, Oct 23-26th. online training modules will be completed prior to the in-person Training.
