Course Description:
This course builds the skills to analyze, plan, and manage smoke from prescribed and wildland fire. It covers smoke management techniques, air quality regulations, health and safety, and tools to predict and mitigate impacts, using classroom instruction, discussions, and simulations.

Course cadre includes:
Melanie Pitrolo (Regional Air Program Manager, USFS), Roger Ottmar (Emeritus, USFS), Jacob Deal (Air Resource Specialist, USFS), Alexia Prosperi (USFS), Deborah Landau (Director of Ecological Management, TNC), and others TBD.

Objectives:
• Identify smoke management objectives and regulatory requirements.
• Apply tools and techniques for predicting and modeling smoke dispersion.
• Develop and evaluate strategies to reduce smoke impacts on sensitive areas.
• Incorporate smoke management considerations into prescribed fire plans.
• Share lessons learned from your own experiences managing smoke.
• Strengthen the community of fire practitioners.

Target Audience:
Personnel responsible for prescribed fire planning and implementation, including land managers, fire leaders, and those pursuing RXB2 or other advanced roles. We welcome a diverse group of practitioners with on-the-ground experience to share smoke management insights as we work to safely increase treated acres.

Course Content:
The course combines brief pre-course preparation with an in-person, instructor led training.
Pre-Course Work: ~ 2 hours of required prework to be completed prior to the course start.
In-Person Instructor-Led Training: 4-day course, conducted daily from 0800-1700 ET

• A Laptop is required for the duration of the course.

Cost:
$650 due upon acceptance into the course. Instructions will be provided regarding payment.
