The Fire Effects Monitor (FEMO) workshop provides hands-on training for personnel responsible for documenting fire effects and supporting informed decision-making before, during, and after prescribed fire operations. Participants learn how to collect meaningful observations, apply monitoring methods, interpret results, and communicate findings that help managers evaluate whether fire objectives are being achieved.

What You Will Learn

  • Conduct objective-driven fire effects monitoring

  • Observe and document fire behavior and fire effects

  • Collect field measurements using standard methods

  • Evaluate first- and second-order fire effects

  • Interpret monitoring data relative to objectives

  • Communicate findings to support operational decisions

  • Apply NWCG standards, terminology, and field practices

  • Prescribed fire practitioners and wildland fire module members

  • Resource advisors and BAER/BAR team members

  • Fire and resource specialists who provide input affecting fire decision-making

  • Those seeking FEMO task book evaluations

  • Anyone needing stronger understanding of fire effects and monitoring

Requirements

  • Current Incident Qualification Card (Red Card)

  • S-290 Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior (federal applicants; comparable knowledge accepted for others)

  • Personal or employer-provided medical insurance

  • Own PPE: fire shelter, hard hat, Nomex clothing, leather gloves, eye protection, 8" leather boots

Logistics

Tuition: No cost

Lodging: Provided at Camp Navajo by NIPFTC

Meals: Participant’s responsibility

Travel: Participant/sponsoring agency responsible for travel to/from training

Salary: Participant or sponsoring agency responsible for all salary costs

Vehicles: Provided by NIPFTC during the session
