Texas tech university chainsaw training report

In 2024, a chainsaw and two pairs of chaps were purchased with funds provided by the national SAFE organization. In Spring 2025, we conducted a one-day chainsaw training session for students enrolled in the prescribed burning course. In addition to the course participants, nine others attended the training, including SAFE officers, general members, and faculty advisor Dr. Nathan Gill. The training covered the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), fueling and oiling procedures, basic troubleshooting, and safe operation of chainsaws.
All student participants are expected to graduate soon with undergraduate and graduate degrees in Natural Resources Management, Ranch Management, or Biology. We hope this hands-on training provides valuable experience that supports their future careers in natural resource management or research.
We plan to continue offering this training in the coming years.
