2027 JFSP Funding Announcement

2027 Joint Fire Science Program Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) Announcements

The interagency Joint Fire Science Program (JFSP) is soliciting proposals from both government and non-government entities through several formal Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) announcements beginning July 7th and closing on September 17th at 5 PM MT.

Primary NOFO

Task Statement 1: Drivers of changing wildfire regimes and consequences for wildfire risk factors

The objective of this task statement is to increase understanding of the drivers and consequences of changing wildfire regimes to inform future management and monitoring plans that accelerate adaptation to these altered regimes that reduce wildland fire risk factors.

Task Statement 2: Smoke impacts from prescribed fire and wildfire

The objectives of this task statement are 1) to better understand the impacts of prescribed fire and wildfire on smoke emissions - to inform appropriate timing, frequency, and extent of prescribed fire programs that maximize ecological benefits while minimizing air quality impacts on communities, and 2) to inform a standardized methodology for tracking prescribed fire emissions.

Fire Leaders and Managers, Emerging Scientists (FLAMES) NOFO

The Joint Fire Science Program is introducing a new opportunity for graduate students through the Fire Leaders and Managers, Emerging Scientists (FLAMES) award.

FLAMES invites current master’s and doctoral students enrolled at U.S. colleges or universities and studying wildland fire or related physical, biological, or social sciences to apply.

The program is designed to strengthen the connection between scientific research and real-world fire management by providing students with experiential learning opportunities and exposure to fire management practices. It also aims to foster mentorship, peer learning, and career development in the wildland fire field.

Students selected for FLAMES awards will:

  • Conduct a research project that supplements their thesis or dissertation work

  • Gain practical experience with wildland fire practitioners through participation in prescribed fire, wildfire, or related fire management activities

  • Participate in regularly scheduled virtual cohort meetings

  • Attend at least one in-person science exchange event and produce a management-relevant product, such as a webinar or factsheet

Regional Fire Science Exchange NOFO

The objective of this task statement is to solicit proposals to lead and execute a particular regional fire science exchange for a period of two years. The JFSP funds and provides oversight to a national collaborative of 15 regional wildland fire science exchanges: the Fire Science Exchange Network (FSEN). The FSEN provides the most relevant, current wildland fire science information to federal, state, local, tribal, and private stakeholders within ecologically similar regions.

This solicitation is seeking individual proposals (i.e., each proposal must be specific to one region) for the following nine regions of the FSEN: Alaska, Appalachians, Great Basin, North Atlantic, Northern Rockies, Northwest, Oak Woodlands, Pacific Islands, and Southwest.
