Position Overview:
The National Association of State Foresters has an immediate opening for Vice President, Fire Programs. This is a senior leadership position providing subject matter expertise and analysis of wildland fire issues as staff to executive management and the NASF Wildland Fire Committee. Serves as team leader, convenor, and principal advisor for development of communications messages and policy positions related to wildfire. Advances state forestry agency priorities and strategic partnerships in an interagency wildland fire environment. Requires extensive experience in all aspects of wildland fire management, state forestry programs, and wildland fire operations. Requires expert knowledge of federal agency legislation, polices, and political processes related to wildland fire. This is a remote position requiring frequent travel.
Responsibilities:
NASF Committee Leadership and Support
Provide leadership and staff support for the NASF Wildland Fire Committee. Plan and execute committee meetings and a large annual CMS meeting.
Inform and advise the NASF Executive Committee on national wildland fire policy issues and recommend NASF positions.
Present annual committee work plans to the NASF Executive Committee for approval and provide progress reports at scheduled meetings.
Management and Supervision
Manage and direct NASF wildland fire staff and support relevant teams consistent with leadership and work plan priorities.
Support the NASF Fire Director on all NIFC, NMAC, and NWCG responsibilities. Ensure coverage and relief during PL4-PL5 deployments.
Subject Matter Expert
Serve as the senior NASF wildland fire subject matter expert and spokesperson. Keep members informed, advise policy and communications teams, and deliver presentations in various forums.
Respond to media inquiries in collaboration with the NASF Communications Director.
Policy and Messaging Development
Advise NASF members and staff leadership on messaging and policies related to wildland fire issues.
Work with the Communications Director and Government Affairs to develop communications strategies and policy positions to be presented to the Executive Committee for approval.
Educate policymakers, partners, and internal teams on wildland fire issues and impacts of proposed solutions.
Partnerships, Coalitions, and Meetings
Represent NASF at federal agency, partner, or coalition meetings.
Support, maintain, and build wildland fire partnerships, including but not limited to the Coalition of Prescribed Fire Councils, Alliance of Forest Fire Compacts, Regional Cohesive Strategy Committees, and Wildland Fire Leadership Council.
Attend and provide briefings and staff support at NASF Executive Committee, Wildland Fire Committee, and Annual Meetings.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Extensive experience in all aspects of wildland fire management and knowledge of state agency forestry/fire operations. Expert knowledge of federal agency legislation, polices, and political processes related to wildland fire. Demonstrated leadership ability. Excellent team, organization, and communications skills. Must be able to travel frequently and work independently. A bachelor’s degree in forestry, natural resources, or fire science is preferred. Security clearance is a plus.
