Introduction and Duties

This position serves as the National Fire Ecologist for WO FAM and provides leadership support and direction in implementing the best available science to address wildfire risk, fuels, and fire ecology management issues. This includes improved planning and implementation of fuel treatments to reduce wildfire risk through tools like Vegetation Departure Analysis, Scenario Planning, Potential Operational Delineations (PODs), Wildfire Hazard Potential, Quantitative Wildfire Risk Assessments (QWRA), and Interagency Fuels Treatment Decision Support System (IFTDSS).

Incumbent provides direction and guidance to support reducing wildfire risk to communities through the integration of fire and fuels research with social science research by coordinating improvements to the Wildfire Risk Communities website and with research units like the Fire Modeling Institute (FMI), and Wildfire Research (WiRē) as well as others. Supporting the development and implementation of outcome-based metrics by supporting the Fuel Treatment Effectiveness Monitoring (FTEM) program and Shared Stewardship Outcome Indicator Pilot projects. Providing reports, briefing papers, and other information to USFS leadership, USDA, and Congress for most of the efforts described above and often requiring a very quick turnaround time. The position also requires coordinating with other Deputy Chief Areas, DOI, and regional fire ecologists and fuels leads.
