USFS Wildland Fire and Fuels Laboratory Experience

USFS Office/Lab and Location: A fellowship opportunity is available with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service (USFS) within the Forest Service Southern Research Station (SRS) located in Athens, Georgia.

Research Project: The participant will be involved with activities within the Athens Prescribed Fire Science Laboratory, a part of the Southern Research Station, USDA Forest Service. The person may participate in fire and fuel experiments in a laboratory and/or field setting. 

Learning Objectives: The person will learn about and participate in activities associated with wildland fire and wildland fuels, including for example, measuring, sorting, weighing wildland fuels that have been collected in the field. There are opportunities to learn about research in forest ecology, fire ecology, soil ecology, fire science, atmospheric science, and ecosystem modeling.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: 2024, soonest available. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year but may be extended upon recommendation of USFS and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full time or part time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. 

Qualifications: The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in one of the relevant fields.
