Florida Fire Manager/North America Fire Specialist

The Florida Fire Manager/North America Fire Specialist is a staff member with TNC’s Florida Business Unit (FLBU). The FLBU has a long and successful history of professional wildland fire management focusing on the use of prescribed fire in maintaining pyrogenic habitats and as a tool for restoration. Fire management is conducted on and off TNC lands with partners and TNC is seen as a leader in this field. This position will be based in the FLBU’s Stewardship & Field Programs Department (SAF) and serve on the SAF Leadership Team. They will report to the SAF Dept Director with coordinated supervision with the TNC Director of Fire Management. Although this position is a staff member of the FLBU, they will provide fire management support to two other Conservancy programs: North America Fire Program (NAFP), and the General Counsel Safety and Risk Office (GCSRO). This position requires an experienced wildland fire professional who is qualified as a National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Type 2 Burn Boss (RxB2). They will be based in Florida and may work from a TNC preserve, home office, or an arranged partner location. They will be expected to travel statewide (FL), nationally, and internationally to support all three programs. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Florida

This position serves as the Fire Manager to the FLBU as 50% of their duties and ensures fire safety, planning, compliance, training, and mentorship for fire staff. They ensure fire staff follow TNC’s fire management guidelines and policies and provides annual fire refreshers to FL fire staff. They also serve as a training cadre member of TNC’s Center for Conservation Initiatives (CCI) and help develop online, hybrid, and in-person fire training. This position manages agreements and contracts and helps seek grant funding that support fire-based strategies. They will participate/ assist with TNC prescribed fires in FL when available. The position is expected to travel infrequently to achieve these responsibilities (20%). 

North America

This position will serve as a Fire Specialist to the North America Fire Program and the General Counsel Safety and Risk Office as 50% of their duties. These duties entail conducting fire program and safety reviews for BUs across the US, review burn plans as needed, assist in coordinating and facilitating prescribed fire and wildland fire training, and mentor fire staff with advancing their fire qualifications. They may serve as a Fire Manager for a BU during transition times and during training exchanges. The position is expected to travel infrequently to achieve these responsibilities (15%).  

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

Florida Fire Manager (50%)

  • Ensures Conservancy fire management requirements and guidelines are met or exceeded

  • Provides technical support to Florida Fire BU Planners and Burn Bosses

  • Ensures notifications are made for all reportable fire incidents and oversees needed internal reviews

  • Ensures timely annual reporting of Chapter's fire management activities

  • Conducts or assists with fire management training through the Center for Conservation Initiatives (CCI) at local, regional, national, and global levels

  • Leads CCI alignment and contributions to the North America Region Living with Fire strategy on behalf of the FLBU

  • Keeps current on internal and external developments in the field of wildland fire management in order to maintain Program excellence

  • Works with SAF staff to seek opportunities to obtain state, federal and private funding to support fire related activities for the FLBU

North America Fire Specialist (50%)

  • Supports the TNC Director of Fire Management in conducting fire program and safety reviews of TNC BU fire activities (mainly in the U.S. but could include other country programs)

  • Assists in coordinating and facilitating prescribed fire and wildland fire training opportunities on the working assumption that training opportunities fill significant gaps in the broader TNC fire community and help BUs and Divisions build a pipeline of TNC personnel advancing in fire qualifications.

  • Supports Fire Manager transitions within TNC BUs.

  • Provides support as Fire Manager for training exchanges and cooperative burning events that span BUs or occur in states without dedicated fire managers.

  • Maintains project and training records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA/BS degree and 5 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.

  • Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.

  • Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies

  • Experience negotiating.

  • Qualified NWCG Type 2 Burn Boss, and able to meet additional Conservancy requirements for RXB2 positions.

  • Annually pass Physical Fitness testing at the moderate level.

  • Must have valid driver’s license and good driving record.
