Fire Management Specialist, National Park Service

New River Gorge National Park is hiring a Fire Management Specialist (Prescribed Fire and Fuels). This position is open to the public.

This position is located in New River Gorge National Park and Preserve in Glen Jean West Virginia working under the Allegheny Zone Fire Management program which oversees Fire and Fuels Management in Ohio and West Virginia National Parks. This Fire Management Specialist position has been identified as a Prescribed Fire and Fuels Specialist and is one of the key management positions under the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard and is categorized as moderate complexity and requires selectee to meet the minimum qualification standards for IFPM prior to being placed into the position. Has program responsibility for prescribed fire, fuels management, smoke management, and wildland fire within New River Gorge NP, WV and Cuyahoga Valley NP, OH. Primary responsibilities of the positions are (1) preparing and carrying out prescribed fire plans, fire effects, manual and mechanical hazardous fuel treatments, and smoke and wildland fire use monitoring; and, (2) wildland fire preparedness and suppression. This is a permanent full time position being advertised as a GS-0401 7/9 career ladder position.

Selective Factors: The applicant must have possessed all the following National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) incident management qualifications and training requirements to be considered eligible for this position:

  • RXB2 -Prescribed Fire Burn Boss, Type 2

  • ENGB or CRWB or HMGB, Single Resource Boss, Crew, or Single Resource Boss, Engine, or Helicopter
