Do you have a passion for nature and a dedication to serving your community? The Natural Areas Department seeks an individual to fill a Sr. Supervisor role in the Ecological Stewardship work group. The successful candidate will lead a team of professional and technical staff that conduct habitat monitoring and implement adaptive management actions across a 40,000-plus acre Natural Areas system.
This position, under the supervision of the Ecological Stewardship Manager, will assist in the leadership of a team responsible for resource monitoring, water rights administration, and adaptive management through various habitat improvement techniques. Restoration, ecology, or fire/disturbance management are helpful skillsets. Highly competitive candidates will be able to describe critical thinking skills, experience with measurement and taking data-informed action, and working with teams to accomplish shared goals.
With a focus on adaptive management and disturbance-related management practices, this position will assume responsibility for building workflows, planning projects, and responding to community member inquiries – all while spending time on the ground evaluating habitat and crew activities across the Natural Areas land portfolio.
The Natural Areas Department is seeking a candidate with at least six years of experience in ecology and/or natural resources with a strong background in understanding and the applied use of ecological monitoring data. Supervisory experience is strongly preferred. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.
Plans and oversees the management of natural areas properties including; wildlife habitat improvement projects, the development and implementation of habitat and wildlife population monitoring programs, and assisting with the development and landscape-level management activities such as grazing for grassland health and prescribed fire.
Responds proactively and presents to community members on a variety of land management issues.
Supervises a work group which may include Crew Chiefs, Specialists, Technicians, and seasonal staff.
Develops, prioritizes, and tracks annual work plans.
Develops annual budget for area of responsibility; tracks, monitors, and supervises expenditures of budgeted funds.
Develops and tracks metrics to assess work product quality and efficiency.
Reports on progress towards strategic plan.
Monitors technology trends for possible implementation to maximize efficiency.
Evaluates Crew Chief, Specialist, and Technician job performance and monitors other classified employee job performance.
Responsible for accounting of time sheets, and work reports.
Recommends employee actions relating to hiring, discipline, and termination of regular employees within the Natural Areas Department.
Responds to customer inquiries and complaints and monitors customer service and complaint resolution.
Reviews and provides comments on capital improvement plans, i.e. building, trail, or restoration plans.
Creates materials for and coordinates the contracting or purchase of goods and services through the City’s purchasing process.
Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively to provide quality, seamless customer service.
