Humboldt State University, the Department of Forestry and Wildland Resources, and the HSU Fire Resilience Institute invites applications for a full-time, 50% teaching/50% research, one-year, temporary faculty position in Fire and Fuels Management. The successful candidate will teach Introduction to Wildland Fire and Wildland Fuels Management. The initial appointment will be for the Spring 2022 semester. Summer and Fall 2022 semester will primarily involve coordinating and conducting field research, assisting with writing publications and extramural grants. On-going and new research projects include fuel treatment effectiveness and longevity in the Klamath Mountains, drivers of fire severity in redwood forests, and timber management impacts on fuels and fire. Depending on satisfactory performance evaluation, available funding, and programmatic needs there is a strong likelihood to extend employment for an additional year. Full announcement here.
Minimum Qualifications:
An earned Ph.D. or equivalent (dissertation defended and accepted) in Forestry, Fire Ecology, Fuels Management or related field from an accredited college of university is required at the time of appointment. This position requires the ability and an enthusiasm for teaching fire and fuels management courses.
Candidates also require a demonstrated record of publishing scientific research in fire ecology, fuels management, or a related field. The successful candidate must demonstrate the following: - Ability and interest to teach field-based courses in fire science, ecology, and/or management;
- Commitment to and/or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds;
- Record of conducting and publishing scientific research related to fire science, ecology, or management;
- Interest in supervising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate research assistants;
- Willingness to lead and assist writing grant proposals of extramural funding; and
- Commitment to collegiality and collaboration for the benefit of the department and the university.
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
- Past experience teaching fire and fuels management courses;
- Demonstrated ability to publish applied research related to fire ecology, fuels management, or related fields in respected journals;
- Record of acquiring extramural funding for research or teaching projects; and
- Experience in working with undergraduate or graduate student research assistants.
