Duties and Responsibilities:

We are seeking an experienced Wildfire Meteorologist to join our wildfire risk team. This individual will have expertise in working with historical and forecast datasets, processing large volumes of data, and integrating real-time weather information. The successful candidate will play a critical role in enhancing our wildfire risk assessments and mitigation strategies by working on projects including:

  • Developing fire weather classification models and creating a Fire Potential Index (FPI) to improve wildfire simulations and predictive capabilities.

  • Analyzing historical and forecast weather data to understand patterns affecting wildfire behavior and risk, and benchmarking Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) conditions against historical data.

  • Integrating real-time weather data into workflows using APIs and downscaling forecasts to high resolution, enhancing the timeliness and accuracy of risk assessments.

  • Evaluating and refining wildfire forecast models, integrating high-quality meteorological data to support application development and improve model precision.

  • Providing meteorological expertise to internal teams and clients, contributing to accurate risk assessments and mitigation strategies.

  • Developing reports, presentations, and technical documentation to effectively communicate findings to clients and stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience with Python and R for weather data analysis and modeling.

  • Proficiency with GIS tools, including the ability to visualize and map weather data.

  • Ability to handle large datasets and derive actionable insights from complex weather patterns.

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to present technical data clearly and concisely.

Education/Experience:

  • M.S. in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or related field.

  • 5-10 years of experience working with real-time weather data, coding, and weather modeling, preferably in the private sector.

Compensation Range:

The estimated compensation range for this position is $90,000 to $130,000 a year for a full-time, exempt position. FEP takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the employee’s work location.
