The Central Pine Barrens Commission is seeking a full time Fire Management Specialist to help facilitate the implementation of prescribed fire within the 105,000 acres of the Central Pine Barrens, on Long Island, NY.
The Central Pine Barrens is a fire dependent ecosystem which is experiencing declines in forest health and high fuel loading due to long term fire suppression. Most recently the ecosystem has demonstrated declines in forest health with outbreaks of southern pine beetle, oak wilt and general oak decline. The goals of this dynamic program is to ensure public safety and forest health and resiliency through wildfire reduction and ecosystem restoration. Home base for this position is the Central Pine Barrens Commission in Westhampton, New York (on Long Island) though the Suffolk County Water Authority as our sponsoring entity.
