Intern, Association for Fire Ecology

The Association for Fire Ecology is an international organization dedicated to improving the knowledge and use of wildland fire in land stewardship. With a growing membership and ambitious plan to grow our programs over the next few years, we are seeking an intern to assist with a broad range of communication and organizational tasks.

The intern will learn about the organization and gain skills in science communication, website content management, membership services, and event management tasks. The intern will have the opportunity to interact with the AFE Board of Directors, National SAFE officers, and AFE Committees and be invited to attend board or committee meetings related to their work with the organization.

All Interns are expected to conduct themselves according to the AFE Code of Ethics.

 Qualifications

Basic

  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited college or university

  • Strong computer skills with proficiencies in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word & PowerPoint) as well as social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)

  • Willing to learn new things and take on new tasks

  • Good communication skills

  • Organized with an attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of wildland fire, ecology, and natural resource management 

  • Interest in science communication, program development and evaluation, or event management

  • Experience with Squarespace or other website platforms

  • Experience editing video or audio files

 Tasks (TBD by intern interests and skill set)

  • Develop new website content (AFE news, SAFE chapter highlights, K-12 educational resources, international organizations)

  • Develop new section of the website for Working Groups

  • Develop new blog for featuring member and partner news and gather content for 3-6 months of posts

  • Update website with job postings and events

  • Assist with event planning and tasks associated with 2022 and 2023 AFE Conferences

  • Assist with webinar planning, including quarterly webinars for studnets focused on career and professional development

  • Create member only area for viewing 2021 Fire Congress presentations and transfer content from event platform to website

  • Edit video and audio files for podcasts and archived presentations

  • Improve existing membership directory and link to website

  • Assist with the creation of a Subject Matter Expert directory

  • Write research highlights for recent Fire Ecology articles

  • Assist with the development of a new professional development webinar series

  • Develop and launch online AFE merchandise store

  • Assist with data entry, cleaning, and analysis for membership, events, and certification programs

 Work Hours

3 month committment, with option to extend. Expect about 10 hours per week. Flexible schedule, with exact number of hours and times to be determined with intern. Meetings to be scheduled between 8am and 5pm eastern time.

Compensation

  • This is an unpaid position.

  • We are happy to modify the requirements of this internship to meet university guidelines for academic credit.

  • Interns will receive two years of free AFE membership and a waived conference registration for a future AFE event.
