The Air Force Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC)'s Wildland Fire Branch (CZOF) has an exciting job opportunity for a GS-12/13 Interdisciplinary: Fire Management Officer. This position is centrally managed with PCS costs covered, at the GS-13 level only. Direct Hire Authority (DHA) will be used to fill this position. This developmental GS-12/13 position is interdisciplinary and can be filled by the following job series: Community Planner GS-0020-12/13; Natural Resources Management and Biological Scientist (Environmental) GS-0401-12/13; General Engineering GS-0801-12/13; Environmental Engineer GS-0819-12/13 or; Physical Scientist GS-1301-12/13. Initial appointment may be made at either the GS-12 or 13 grade. The incumbent may receive non-competitive promotion to the next performance grade (GS-13) level subject to supervisor determination that full proficiency has been acquired, all required on-the-job and/or formal training has been successfully completed, and all regulatory and statutory requirements have been met.
Location to be determined within the Midwest region, co-located with the Branch's field or HQ personnel. Potential locations include Air Force installations in San Antonio, TX; Colorado Springs, CO; Albuquerque, NM or Ellsworth, SD. Position is compatible for regular or situational telework, but is not eligible for remote work.
In this position, you will serve as the regional wildland fire-planning specialist and operations coordinator for the for wildland support module work. Wildland support modules are made up of a mix of cooperating federal and state agency personnel. The primary purpose of the position is to provide specialized and professional guidance, leadership, coordination, and program direction in wildland fire planning and operations--centered around fuels management and prescribed fire implementation.
Supplemental Position Requirements
This position requires experience and qualifications that must be met prior to entrance into the position as a condition of hire demonstrating knowledge and experience in fire management. Candidates must demonstrate at least one (1) of the following National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) or other stated qualification: Wildland Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1), Fire Effects Monitor (FEMO), Resource Advisor (READ), Resource Advisor-Fireline (REAF), Agency Administrator (AADM), Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Team-all positions, Situation Unit Leader (SITL), Resources Unit Leader (RESL), Society of American Foresters-Certified Forester, Society for Range Management-Certified Range Manager or comparable state or agency license or certification. NWCG position currency is not required, however, incumbent must have previously been qualified.
This position serves as a Fire Management Officer (FMO) on a large fire management organization, providing short and long-range fire management planning, program direction and coordination, and evaluation of the fire management program. The position is responsible for developing and implementing an integrated fire management program to achieve resource management objectives. The position has not been approved for Secondary Fire Retirement (SFR) but the Branch plans to submit it for approval in the future. The outcome of this submission cannot be guaranteed and is taking substantial time to process.
