FEMO Workshop: Fire Effects Monitoring

The Nature Conservancy is hosting an in-depth fire effects monitoring and fire behavior workshop to help interested fire practitioners to expand their knowledge of  fire ecology, fire behavior, what it means to be a Fire Effects Monitor (FEMO), and monitoring protocols and methods. Priority deadline for applications is Sunday, August 17, 2025. Applications received after that date may still be considered, but those received by Aug. 17th will be prioritized for consideration.

Description

This is intended to be a five-day course blending classroom time and fieldwork with primary emphasis being on building and practicing practical skills. The workshop will include talks and presentations from local and regional experts on weather, fuels, and fire behavior, including instruction in nature journaling with Miriam Morrill, author of Pyrosketchology.

Topics will include: 

  • pre-burn evaluations

  • day-of observations (with potential for live fire training)

  • day-of-burn etiquette

  • post-burn evaluations

  • FEMO reporting

  • communication tips

  • safety operating as a single resource

Intended Audience

Open to all fire practitioners involved in prescribed, cultural, and/or wildland fire with any level of experience in monitoring fire effects, specifically including:

  • Fire practitioners working in mixed conifer Sierra forests and/or interested in learning more about burning and fire effects in this ecosystem

  • Fire practitioners at any level of FEMO experience including: (1) Individuals interested in or with experience of fire effects monitoring not associated with taskbooks, (2) Individuals interested in opening an agency FEMO taskbook (note that no taskbooks will be issued at the workshop), (3) Individuals with an agency FEMO taskbook open, (4) Agency Qualified FEMOs
