Wood You Believe It? Aspen Interactions with Fire and Wildfire Spread in the Southwestern U.S.

Thursday, November 20, 2025 4pm ET

From disease resilience to browse pressure, recreational value to fire resistance, aspen has been getting a lot of attention over the past few years. If you have ever wondered about how aspen interacts with fire or how aspen fits into fire planning and suppression, please join us for this webinar from the Southwest Fire Science Consortium where we will dive into various aspects of fire-aspen interactions. Topics will include: the ability of aspen to slow fire growth and act as a firebreak, fire radiative power/burn severity in aspen forests of the Southern Rockies, and the relationship between stand composition and suppression strategies - whether fire lines are more likely to hold when built through aspen.

Speakers: Matt Harris, Western Colorado University; Max Cook, University of Colorado Boulder; and Trevor Carter, Colorado State University
