Managing Gulches: Wildfire Mitigation Lessons from the Field

Pacific Fire Exchange

Thursday, April 2, 2026 at 1pm PT/4pm ET

Join the Pacific Fire Exchange program (PFX) for a webinar launching new resources that share practical lessons from Hawaiʻi land managers working to reduce wildfire risk in and around gulches . Subject matter experts (SMEs) interviewed for this project include Lance DeSilva (DOFAW DLNR Maui), Paul Higashino (Kaho‘olawe Island Reserve Commission), Joe Imhoff (Skyline Conservation Initiative), Yumi Kam (Wai‘anae Mountains Watershed Partnership), Cheyenne Hiapo Perry (Mauna Kea Watershed Alliance), Willie Rice (Kealakekua Mountain Reserve), Sara Tekula (Kula Community Watershed Alliance), Amy Tsuneyoshi (Board of Water Supply).

The webinar will introduce the suite of new resources on gulch management best practices, followed by a panel discussion with some of our SMEs on key takeaways, and will conclude with an open talk story and audience Q&A to explore applications, challenges, and opportunities for wildfire mitigation in drainage areas.

PFX is a science communication program jointly run by Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. We aim to improve wildfire outcomes in Hawaiʻi and the Western Pacific by pursuing, translating, and sharing fire science and research with those who are dealing with wildfire.
