Shortleaf pine: challenges and opportunities for an unsung species

December 15, 2026 | 10am PT/1pm ET

Presenter: Dr. Ben Knapp, University of Missouri

Shortleaf pine is widely distributed in the eastern United States but often receives less attention than co-occurring species. Although associated with frequent-fire, open natural communities, it commonly occurs today in closed-canopy forests in mixture with other species. This presentation provides an overview of the range of variation where shortleaf pine occurs, discusses the state of knowledge and critical information gaps, and presents opportunities for overcoming barriers to increase its management.

Presented in partnership with the Southern Fire Exchange!
