September 30 - LANDFIRE Compared: Synergies with various Ecosystem Classification Systems

Speakers: Ayn Hunt, PhD, Oregon State University; Ray Brunner, Vegetation Ecologist, Institute for Natural Resources, Portland State University

A variety of ecosystem classification systems are available to land managers, researchers and policy makers that operate at local to global scales and differ in their approach and intent. We will discuss lessons learned from our comparisons of four national ecosystem classification schemes: USDA Forest Service Terrestrial Ecological Unit Inventory, USDA Forest Service-U.S. Department of Interior LANDFIRE, U.S. National Vegetation Classification (NVC), and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service ecological sites. We will compare the similarities, differences, strengths, and limitations of these classifications, as well as opportunities to use them in combination to take advantage of potential synergies.
