January 28: Coordinating Smoke Management: Insights from Albany, Georgia’s Pilot Project Holly Nowell, PhD Partner Organization: Tall Timbers Albany, Georgia, is surrounded by fire-managed landscapes where balancing prescribed burns with air quality is a shared priority. This talk explores a collaborative, multi-agency approach to smoke management, bringing together state agencies, private landowners, and non-profits. It provides an update on the ongoing pilot project, highlighting progress and challenges. LANDFIRE data are being used to estimate fuel types, fuel loadings, and total emissions from prescribed fires, providing a baseline to help evaluate the performance of the pilot project. The discussion will then look ahead to the project’s future and its potential impact on air quality in the Albany area.
