The REBURN modeling framework evaluates pathways to restore fire to fire-excluded landscapes. Building on previous work in Washington and British Columbia, the REBURN team is working in partnership with the Karuk Tribe to examine pathways that support the ecocultural restoration of fire in the western Klamath Mountains. Modeled fire and vegetation dynamics can map to focal species and culturally valued foods, fibers and medicines. Through simulations, we are exploring how proactive fire use can shift fire-excluded landscapes that are prone to high severity fire events to landscapes that support diverse forests, woodlands, and nonforests maintained by ecocultural fire stewardship.
Speaker: Dr. Susan Prichard, University of Washington
Dr. Susan Prichard is a fire ecologist at the University of Washington School of Environmental and Forest Sciences. Her main interests are in the effects of fire and other disturbances on forest dynamics and landscape strategies to mitigate future fire severity and smoke. She is focused on applied research questions that help to inform adaptive stewardship under climate change, including innovative approaches to wildland fuel characterization and fire modeling.
