Alaska Fire Science Consortium Fall Fire Science Workshop Part 2
Tuesday, November 4, 2025, 1-3pm Alaska time
This year's focus will highlight AFSC’s Fall/Winter webinar series with presentations exploring smoke issues due to wildland fire in Alaska, reburns in the boreal forest, fire modeling with CFFDRS and ALFRESCO, quantifying drivers of return areas, updates from the Geographic Information Network of Alaska, protecting permafrost with targeted fire suppression and new additions to wildfire hazard maps.
Agenda:
1:00 - 1:05 PM:
Hilary Shook, Alaska Fire Science Consortium
Introduction and relevant highlights.
1:05 - 1:15 PM:
Jen Delamere, Geographic Information Network of Alaska at University of Alaska Fairbanks, Eyes in the Sky, Innovation on the Ground: Satellite-Driven Advances in Fire Detection & Monitoring
Review current and upcoming satellite-based wildfire detection and monitoring data products used in Alaska and generated at UAF's Geographic Information Network of Alaska (GINA).
1:15 - 1:35 PM:
Ed Graham, Geographic Information Network of Alaska at University of Alaska Fairbanks; Jen Schmidt, Institute of Social and Economic Research at University of Alaska Anchorage
The SAFRR team's work to update the statewide fuel treatment database and create two online applications. A redesigned fuel treatment app that lets users explore existing fuel treatments, and a new photo database of existing fuel treatments at different ages. Both can be used to help design wildfire projects and community engagement.
1:35 - 1:55 PM:
Nick Link, Bonanza Creek Long-Term Ecological Research site at University of Alaska Fairbanks
Nature-based climate solutions. His PhD research focuses on the ecological effects of fuel reduction treatments, and ways to harness disturbance ecology theory to develop green fuel breaks. Green breaks of native species like birch and aspen would effectively limit wildfire behavior while offering up the critical ecosystem services provided by natural forests to Alaska communities.
1:55 - 2:15 PM:
Eric Miller, Bureau of Land Management
Thinnings are burning? What are we learning? A look at fuel treatment areas impacted recently by wildfire.
2:15 - 2:30 PM:
Kenni Psenak, Alaska Venture Fund
An overview of the Fire Adapted Alaska program and opportunities to engage with communities.
2:30 - 2:45 PM:
Q&A and evaluations. Your feedback helps AFSC and our partners better serve you.
