Introduction to the AKVEG Map: A repeatable, ecologically detailed vegetation map for Alaska with Timm Nawrocki
December 1, 2026 | 11am PT/2pm ET
The Alaska Vegetation (AKVEG) Map provides consistent and detailed vegetation spatial data across Alaska at a 10-m resolution, representing vegetation types defined in the U.S. National Vegetation Classification. The map consists of multiple components to adapt to a variety of user needs. Most users will likely find the categorical map easiest to interpret while quantitative maps of vegetation composition provide analytical flexibility for statistical analyses.
Timm Nawrocki is a terrestrial ecologist at University of Alaska Anchorage who specializes in spatial analyses of terrestrial vegetation, soils, and wildlife; remote sensing; and identification of vascular plants, bryophytes, and lichens. Since 2021, he has been a co-chair of the Vegetation Working Group of Alaska Geospatial Council. He received a B.S. in Biology from the University of Virginia and a M.S. in Biological Sciences from the University of Alaska Anchorage.
