AFE Communications and Program Assistant

The Association for Fire Ecology (AFE) is an international organization dedicated to improving the knowledge and use of wildland fire in land stewardship. With a growing membership and ambitious plan to grow our programs over the next few years, we are seeking a Communications and Program Assistant. The Communications and Program Assistant will work with AFE’s Administrative Director, the AFE Board of Directors, National SAFE officers, and AFE Committees to complete tasks.

Skills and Qualifications

Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field and experience in at least some of the following areas:

  • Understanding of wildland fire, ecology, or natural resource topics and current issues

  • Writing and creating products to share scientific information with technical and non-techincal audiences

  • Using online email marketing programs to develop newsletters and targeted campaigns

  • Developing content and managing social media platforms and website (Squarespace)

  • Organizing and hosting webinars or online meetings

  • Editing video or audio files

  • Assessing audience needs, evaluating programs, and summarizing key results

  • Developing professional networks to share information and resources

Position Responsibilities

Task Area 1: Science Communications and Member Engagement

  • Assist with monthly newsletter development

  • Develop and manage social media content

  • Update and develop content for AFE website and member portal

    • Develop and manage new section of the website for Fire Interest Groups

    • Develop new blog for featuring member and partner news

  • Develop graphics for website, social media, and communications

  • Assist with planning and delivering webinars, in collaboration with partners

  • Edit audio files for Fire Ecology podcasts, prepare transcriptions, and post on AFE website

  • Write research highlights for recent Fire Ecology articles and collaborate with authors to finalize key lessons to share with broader community

  • Communicate conference content to a wide audience through social media, video summaries, interviews, storyboards, etc.

  • Collect, edit, organize, and archive conference content for wildland fire community to use and repurpose after the event for training and independent learning opportunities

  • Assist with data entry, cleaning, and analysis for membership, events, and AFE programs

  • Assist with evaluation of AFE programs according to the 5-year strategic plan

 Task Area 2: Student, Certification, and Mentoring Programs

  • Assist with Student and Early Career Connections webinar series

  • Assist national student officers and student chapter officers with information regarding training opportunities, chapter management and organization, and chapter communications 

  • Seek formation of new student chapter at universities with fire-related coursework

  • Coordinate development of educational resources to be shared among wildland fire faculty and student chapters

  • Assist with the AFE Certification and Mentoring Futures programs and enhance marketing to reach new applicants

  • Plan and manage student and volunteer activities during AFE events

  • Conduct program evaluation for the AFE Certification and Mentoring Futures programs and implement improvements based on results

  • Update AFE wildland fire jobs board and transition to new jobs board platform

  • Update website with upcoming events and trainings to assist with professional development and continuing education opportunities that count toward recertification

Please Note

  • This position is funded for up to 40 hours per week until 9/30/25, with a possibility of extension with continued grant funding.

  • Currently, we are not able to offer benefits for this position.

  • This position is remote and we are only accepting applicants who reside in Florida or California.
